1. Start with a plan
Before you start packing boxes or hiring a moving company, it’s important to sit down and make a plan. Figure out what your budget is, what date you need to be moved by, and what your priorities are. This will help you to make decisions throughout the process and stay on track.
2. Declutter your home
One of the first things you should do when preparing to move is to declutter your home. Get rid of any items that you no longer use or need, as this will make packing and moving much easier. You can donate unwanted items, sell them on a site like eBay, or simply throw them away.
3. Start packing early
If possible, start packing up your home early. This will help to minimise the stress of moving, as you won’t have to do everything at the last minute. Pack one room at a time and label each box with its contents and which room it belongs in.
4. Get help from friends and family
If you know people who are willing to help you move, take them up on their offer! Having extra hands will make the process much easier and faster. Just be sure to return the favour when they need help moving in the future.
5. Hire a professional moving company
If you don’t have friends or family who can help you move, or if you simply don’t want to ask for help, you can hire a professional moving company. Be sure to do your research and get quotes from multiple companies before making a decision.
6. Pack an essentials box
When packing up your belongings, be sure to set aside a box of essentials that you will need on your first day in your new home. This should include items like toiletries, towels, bedding, dishes, and clothing. This way, you won’t have to dig through boxes when you first arrive at your new place.
7. Change your address
Once you know your new address, be sure to change your address with the post office, or set a redirect and update your information with any companies or organisations that send you mail. You may also want to forward your mail for a few weeks or months after you move just to be safe.
8. Clean your old home
Before leaving your old home for good, be sure to give it a good cleaning. This way, you’ll get your security deposit back if it is rented and leave the place in good condition for the next owners/tenants. If possible, try to do this a few days before moving so that you’re not rushed on moving day itself – or even better hire someone to do it.
9 . Say goodbye to your neighbours
If you’ve been living in your current home for a while, chances are you’ve made some friends with your neighbours. Be sure to say goodbye before moving so that you can keep in touch after you’ve moved away.
10. Drop off keys and make notes of energy readings
Don’t forget to gather all copies of your keys and allow time to drop off them off to the estate agents, and be sure to take any meter reading ready at both your existing and new property.
